If it were possible to let go of a past completely, would you want to? Can one truly start anew, or are old patterns inescapable?
I often find myself dwelling on the past, revisiting circumstances and retracing my steps in search of a different outcome. Restlessly questioning the past in this way hinders my ability to live in the moment. This realization about the weight of the past and my desire to rewrite my story is at the heart of If and When.
Creating and photographing miniature scenes has become a type of visual journal for me to explore personal subjects and reflect on experiences. The images in If and When are inspired by a mix of memories and idealized paths. I selectively focus on a portion of the foreground, using shallow depth of field to blur the figure and impart a painted aesthetic. The soft focus also downplays the scale of the model, leaving room to reflect on the longed for and the unknown.
If Summer Ends
When The Bell Rang
If It's Early
When The Fog Lifts
If Something Stirs
When It Ebbs
If It's Steady
When It's Settled
If It's Dear
